Domperidone and Contraindicated Medications

We hope you are enjoying the beginning of summer, or winter for our sites in the Southern hemisphere!

We are working diligently to activate our new sites and would like to take this opportunity to welcome Australia to EMPOWER! We look forward to start-up at our international sites in the near future, and are optimistic that we will see an increase in our recruitment rate.

The following is a list of common medications that may alter the metabolism and pharmacokinetics of domperidone, have dopaminergic or antidopaminergic activity, or affect prolactin levels. Women taking any of these medications are excluded from participation in EMPOWER (EMPOWER Protocol Version 1.2, June 2012, page 14).

Central Nervous System Antidepressants 

  • Fluoxetine (Prozac®)
  • Fluvoxamine (Luvox®)
  • Haloperidol (Haldol®)
  • Lithium
  • Methadone
  • Nefazodone (Serzone®)
  • Quetiapine (Seroquel®)
  • Trazodone (Desyrel®)
  • Citalopram (Celexa®)

Macrolide Antibiotics

  • Clarithromycin (Biaxin®)
  • Telithromycin (Ketek®)
  • Erythromycin
  • Azithromycin (Zithromax®)
  • Ciprofloxacin (Cipro®)
  • Levofloxacin (Levaquin®)
  • Mefloquine (Lariam®)
  • Ofloxacin (Floxin®)

Azole Antifungals

  • Itraconazole (Sporanox®)
  • Ketoconazole (Nizoral®)
  • Voriconazole (Vfend®)
  • Fluconazole (Diflucan®)

Natural Health Products

  • Ginko Biloba
  • Goldenseal


  • Cisapride (Prepulsid®)
  • Grapefruit Juice
